He is just an old fashioned guy who believes in chivalry and that the man in the relationship should pay for all good times and share the bad times !!! ....not necessarily true or relevant in todays day and age , but hey feel good and wanted rather than hurt and confused ...if you really want to make him feel wanted and you want to appreciate his visiting you, buy him a nice present to remember the visit & you !

He probably feels like you are trying to emasculate him by paying. Guys feel like it is their job to pay for stuff. This is generalizing a lot, but that has been my experience. One guy told me that women cost money, guys know this, and accept it.
