American is growing extremely Obese (9 tea spoons of sugar in every 12 oz Soda can. The Ave. America is now consuming 135 lbs. /yr. per person) rapidly growing out of what used to be normal Sizes with Obese children saddled with health problems, previous generations didn’t have.
America is addicted to Sugar, needing to go cold turkey for the good society, saving on healthcare costs.?
Something needs to be done to help quell the Obesity crisis in our children and praying isn’t working, why not start with sugar?
There’ll be those whom will say we should be free to eat what we want but we live in the allusion of a free society our Gov puts us all in the same boat, do you want to pay the higher Insurance and economic costs for Obese Sugar addicts whom can’t control t themselves?
Government make all kinds of substances they claim harmful illegal, why not Sugar?

Sugar is a root ingredient that is important to food as a catalyst for cooking, baking, and for flavor, and is a key component in basic nutrition and is in things like bread, spaghetti sauce, juice, butter, margerine, soup, peanut butter and much, much more.
Don't Forget, Sugar is also an economic staple in this country.
Salt is also a reason why people are obese and have health problems too...
As with any food, moderation is key. Besides, don't take it away from those whom use it properly because of those whom do not.
There are many other reasons why people become obese, so do not blame it one one thing, there are way to many factors that have contributed to obesity in the United, blaming it soley on Sugar is spiteful and ingnorant.

One of the major problems with obesity is that we consume foods that elevates the blood sugar level fast. When it falls back we feel hungry again.
rice, flour, sugar all are mostly available in processed form. Not the whole grain, not in their natural form.
And I don't know whether it's the american taste or the manufacturers' choice for selling more, but in the states everything tastes way too salty or sweet.
Sadly in my country (Turkey) same thing is happening, they add more salt to chips, more sugar to everything sweet. (Well these products aside, traditional Turkish cuisine is not very healthy either :))
I personally would like to have options. Lesser fat lesser salt lesser sugar or better, natural ingredients.
So I'd say making sugar illegal is a bit too far
Every once in a while we could treat ourselves with processed sugar.
But I agree that the case is pretty severe with obesity right now
Cheers

I think the problem can be solved through incentives, such as what they are doing with hybrid vehicles now, giving tax breaks to those who buy hybrid vehicles. They should try to give incentives to companies to produce healthier foods for people to eat. It will then make sense for companies to make healthier foods, and not just that, companies will want people to buy the healthier food so they will spend marketing money on it, with commercials for it.
Right now, healthier foods are more expensive, and so it is much cheaper!

Yes. they should also control how much coffee we drink and what vitamins we eat and make us all harvest all of our own food and take all the cars away and only sell bikes and...............
Do you really want to give the government that much control??

That would be good for health, or even to promote much stronger warnings about intake... but it will never happen of course.
