There are several types of Blood cells in the human blood. These include the red blood cells (erythrocytes), the white blood cells (leukocytes) and the platelets.

All these cells are formed in the bone marrow. Since some cells have to start the process so such cells are called precursors which later divide to give rise to the blood cells. The precursors for the Red cells are known as erythroid precursors.

It all starts with the stem cell - the erythroid precursor's precursor. One erythroid precursor is called a Rubriblast. These immature cells are in the bone marrow where they multiply, mature, and are then released into the peripheral blood circulation as erythrocytes which are also known as red blood cells.
