Cutting is evidence of a suicidal tendancy. This cutting may be aimed at relieving otherwise unbearable emotions, sensations of unreality and numbness. It is probably due to a severe lack of self-esteem, or in other words you hate yourself for some reason and wish to visit pain on yourself because of it. Substance abuse is also considered a risk factor as are some personal characteristics such as poor problem resolution skills, Impulsivity, hopelessness and aggression

How to stop. You must first understand why YOU do it, not just the medical or pshycological reason but the reason why you find relief in self-mutilation. Once you have identified the reason you can work on expressing your emotions in natural ways, like screaming your head off, or crying, don't be afraid to feel the emotions, don't bottle them in, because that is where the behavior originates, unresolved emotional trauma. Or in other words, stuff you don't want to deal with so it manifests in cutting.

Good luck, its a long road, but you can beat it.

First off, some of you people who asnwered were very rude and disrespectful. This is a serious matter not something to joke about or call her a dumba** for! Now, I think you need to figure out why you cut yourself first. Try to find some other way to express your pain when your feeling down. Every time you feel like cutting try reading a book or writing poetry. I know it's not going to be easy to just stop cold trukey, but maybe if you started to keep a journal and write down how your feeling you could figure out why you do this and maybe it will help you stop. I'm not a doctor so I would suggest you talk to them first, I am just giving you some suggestions on alternative ways to express your feelings. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to e-mail me (babydj1803@yahoo.com). I know it's hard to go through something like that alone, especially if you have no one to talk to. Keep your head up. i hope this helps you! :)

If you are a "cutter" that can be very, very difficult. My suggestion is that is you have ANY inkling at all that you are starting to have an episode please seek some help. If you know you are a cutter you are obviously already being treated by a psychologist and physician. Cutters can learn to lead productive lives if meds and great care is taken. High stress situations will definitely trigger episodes so be sure to have a buddy or a family member keep an eye on you during those times.

Locally, we have a couple of support groups for cutters. One specifically on campus of our community college. It might not hurt to have some allies on your side.

Good luck to you. It can be a tough road.

Put a rubber band or a hair tie around you wrist, and snap it whenever you want to cut. You have to snap it hard enough, but if you do, it helps a lot. It's been working for me for like two weeks.

Seek out a professional who deals specifically with self-injury. Cutting typically is associated with a form of mental disorder such as clinical depression or bipolar disorder. It is usually the underlying cause that requires treatment.

You can learn more about this disorder here:

If you are having thoughts of suicide, call 911 or find a suicide helpline for your area in your phonebook or using this site:

Just decide to stop. If you're trying to mask emotional pain by making yourself feel worse physically, aren't you just compounding the situation? Isn't cutting just another form of addiction?

You make decisions for your life. Choose not to cut. Period. Choose to get away from the things, people, situations, and circumstances that temp you to cut yourself.

You decide not to smoke. You decide not to jump off of buildings. You decide not to ram your car into embankments. You decide not to shoot yourself. So, just decide not to cut.

Give all your knives/blades/whatever to your friends. Don't let them give them back to you no matter what. I asked on of my friends that used to cut to give me two of his knives. He wanted to stop, so he gladly handed them over to me. He's stopped cutting since. It's kinda hard to cut yourself if you don't have anything to cut yourself with! :P
