To be fair I haven't read DaVinci, but I'm assuming it sucks based solely on what I know of the plot. For some masochistic reason I read the Celestine Prophecies. I can't believe I just admitted that in public.

Gallivanting - I was considering it, but then I thought that doing that might be too obvious. Even for me.

For all of you who said 'you can't criticize a book you haven't read', the question was really talking about the publicity aspect of it.

I can't believe you admitted it either... but that's what would pick because DaVinci code had the added benefit of really, really annoying the Christians.

I don't remember the publicity over the Celestine Prophecies, but I know I tried to read it and found it wretched. All the hype and flap over the DaVinci Code is pretty annoying. It's just a book; a decent summer read, but not very well written, and not at all startling to anyone who has any background in the subject matter.

"The DaVinci Code" was a thriller. There was nothing spiritual about it. By the way, how can you assume it was poorly written if you've never read it? I haven't read the "Celestine Prophesies", so I won't say anything about the book. That sounds fair, right?

Ugh. Celestine Prophesy. I couldn't get past page 3. At least DaVinci Code had a good story, even if it sounded like it was written by a 6 year old.

DaVinci Code was not intended to be a spiritual book. It's always been a work of fiction. Learn to enjoy it so.
I read it and thought of it as a fairly average detective type story. Yes the writer made some liberal use of religion, art, history, etc., but so do most writers. This one probably struck so many nerves because so many readers had some connection with Christianity.
Nevertheless, it was only a work of fiction.

The DaVinci Code actually has a very well researched plot. It wasn't, in fact, poorly written at all.

The DaVinci code was very well written (unlike my answer), you may disagree with the premise but that doesn't change the fact that it was well written.
This question and certain answers reflect an interesting fact, the number of people willing to say "I haven't read it but I've heard it was bad....."

The Da Vinci Code really can't be lumped in as a spiritual book because it was never touted as anything but fiction. So, your analogy is not quite accurate.
Celestine Prophecies was actually written as more a "Nostradamus" type of writing, wherein prophecies were written down as purported "fact" or "possible fact."
Sorry, but you can't compare a fiction novel with something purporting to be fact.
