I work for a bank, and my sister in law has a b/f who is an illegal alien. I don't particularly like either of them, and I recently found out that he may have provided a false social security number when opening a checking account at the bank I work for.
Would you turn him in? I'm not going to call the police or anything, but I feel that it is my duty to alert the bank to possible illegal activity. I work in audit/compliance, so this is the type of thing I'm always on the look out for; it's just unfortunate that it is someone I know this time. I don't agree with people entering and living in this country illegally, so that makes it even harder for me to sympathize with this guy.

No, I didn't go looking for dirt on this guy; he showed up on one of the reports I review on a daily basis.
I have already spoken to my supervisor, and he pretty much left it up to my judgement as to whether I should pursue this or not.

you have to be sure before doing something so drastic. If the whole thing goes haywire and you end up making a big mistake, that could further distance your relationship with your in-law. Do a little investigating (since that's what you're good at) and report it only when you have cold hard evidence.

If he used a false social security number and committed a crime in doing so,then despite feeling either way the bank needs to know.If he has job skills then he needs to try to get a green card instead of being here illegally.Maybe tell a trusted co-worker and they can do the reporting so you don't cause bad blood in the family, that would make family gatherings awkward.

I would report it, just like and according to bank policy, as if this was just anyone.
It has nothing to do with being an illegal alien ( they may open bank accounts if they want to) but not with false identification,
This can cause problems for the person whose number is being used.
But as an bank employee you have a obligation and duty to protect your work place and follow the laws.

I think you should do what is right.. you don't have to make it known that you are the one that called..
Just call anonymously one day and say.. I think that someone had opened and acct with your bank, using a false social security number.
You can read silent and possibly not only lose your job, but if he is lying to the bank, though falsifications.. I am sure he is lying to other institutions as well.

I agree with you completely about the illegal activity in this country and I would definately tell the bank you work for but just let them know that you want to be unidentified if the matter goes further than better you and the person you are telling.

I would turn him in. Being in the country illegally is one thing, but stealing someone's social security number to open a bank account is a whole different realm of badness. Just think about the poor person whose identity that he stole!! This should make your decision easier.

I completely agree that you should not turn him in to the police, but you should speak to your manager about possible illegal activity, namely pointing in his direction. It is not right for him to get away with such an atrocity, nor is it okay for him to be here illegally. Don't feel guilty about the situation, but show due dilligence in making the bank aware of the situation.

Its not about who you like or dislike. Its all about being honest and living with yourself. If you don't tell and you sound like a honest person
How wouldd you live with yourself? Ease your mind because if you don't, This could hunt you for the rest of your life. (Let the bank know!!!)
It's not an issue of who told, but it is an issue of living with a secret that coul hunt you the rest of your life . OK? Now CLEAR YOUR MIND. (JUST A REMINDER) IF YOU DO NOT TURN HIM IN IT MAKES YOU GUILTY TO OF BREAKING THE LAW. WHY? BECAUSE YOU KNOW . FREE YOUR MIND YOUR ARE A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN RIGHT?

since that is part of your job (looking for possible illegal activity) aren't you obligated to alert the bank? if you do and feel bad about it later, just keep that in mind, that you had to. I don't agree with people entering and living in the U.S. illegally either.

The law is the law and it is your duty to turn him in. Besides if he is caught and your bank sees a connection between the two of you then your job is on the line
