I am an EM3 (third class petty officer) E-4 and am not sure whether to wear my service dress whites or working whites. I have been to a navy retirement in uniform and I wore working whites because I didn't participate in the ceremony and I won't be participating in the Air Force ceremony either so logic tells me to wear working whites but it is a more formal event so I am confused on which uniform to wear.

You kind of answered your own question. Listing the retirement ceremony as a "more formal event" you should probably wear the dress whites. Of course you could always check with the retiree or another attendee and see what he/she is wearing. Did you get a formal invitation? What does the invitation say for dress code? OR is this simply a unit event?

from what I remember, I'd wear the dress whites. But as stated above, see if you can talk to the retiree, and double check because I remember how much more comfortable the working whites were than the dress whites.
