SAS / SBS are generally considered to be the cream of the cream, but are clearly a very small force compared to the U.S special forces.
Interestingly Delta force was formed after the orgininating U.S officer had served with the SAS, and it was set up on the same lines. Imitation is the best form of flattery!
As for the numpty who said the French........the only thing they are good at is blowing up unarmed Greenpeace ships in harbour and being able to say "I surrender" in ten different languages.

Both are very good but the sas are always going to take the win, navy seals are Americans best speicial force and the sad are usually rated as better than them at number 1 in the world, the sas is also the most secret force in the world, a few years ago a CIA agent got taken hostage by terrorists but the sas were chosen over Delta Force to rescue him, the sas saved the agent and faced no casualties even though there was a firefight, at a different time they also had 8 sas soldier taking on 250 Taliban soldiers, the sas one, I'm sure there have been some to say like that about Delta Force but I doubt as extreme as that

Well now the force you know about is never the best.
Seriously, at the upper edge of human ability (where all of these men live) no one is better than the other, and that includes the French, Germans, Israelis Australians, & a couple others. Sure certain individuals may be better at this skill or that, but teams are balanced. Equipment & funding are the only things with any hope of making even a slight difference, but that's almost immeasurable.
The special thing about delta is that those guys are first ourstanding soldiers, then airborne (para), then become eliete rangers, then special forces (green berets), then after a long career might be selected to serve with delta for a year or two. They are the most elite of our already elite special operations forces. SAS is a much bigger organization that recruits from much lower in the ranks. Their best soldiers are the same as our delta & their least experience just like our 75th Ranger Rgmt.

I think this question is totally without merit. The SAS has some of the MOST experienced special forces in the world particularly with the conflict in northern Ireland. However, that was true in the 90's when that conflict was particularly hot, now a days however, I would have to say that as far as operational experience goes the torch has to be passed to Delta, Army Special Forces, Navy SEALS, or Marine FORCE RECON.
The main reason for this is that spec-ops are responsible for a large percentage of our operations in afghanistan, and I am sure they are not Idle in Iraq either.
But the question of who is better is kinda academic at best, and doesn't really have an answer.

The SAS are the elite physically and mentally, The Americans have quite alot of Gucci kit but dont know how to use it, the SAS keep it simple.
The Spetznatz are actually fitter and harder than the Delta Force boys too but dont have the kit.
They will never admit it but everyone fears the SAS.

Any American with any military knowledge KNOWS the SAS is by far the best trained force in the world. Their is no evidence that the DELTA force is even number two..that could go to the Israelis.
The key to US military has been air power.

In response to Telclis, most of the important special ops in Afghanistan and Iraq are headed up by the SAS as they are THAT GOOD. The SAS were the men on the ground who guided the air strikes that finished off Al-Zaquiri.
Delta have the tools.
SAS need no tools.

The SAS have the widest reaching most varied and sucessfull operational history. Unsurpassed by any special forces anywhere in the world. They were the first and best at what they do. You dont see it on the news and you dont see it in the papers but apart from a small mistake with a Brazilian electrician they are the best.

No doubt it's going to be passionate, but how are we ever going to find out?
And isn't it a fact that all special forces get's the same kind of training?
I mean regardless if they are SAS, Delta or Spetnaz they have roughly the same tasks in a war.
