I don't think that most people actually "despise" Jehova's Wittnesses, instead I believe that most people just don't understand them and are frustrated by the perceived intrusion into their time. Here in the US, most people seem to be pretty private about their religious beliefs, so the concept of overt evangelism strikes them as either odd or presumptive. That tends to lead to confusion or frustration about the motives of the JW who is approaching them.
While I am not a JW, and have a belief system that is very different from theirs, I have always enjoyed the conversations I've had with members of that faith. I respect their calling, it's just different from mine. I doubt that really makes me much different than most people. Perhaps I may have a bit more patience and therefore may be more willing to devote the time to a polite conversation now and then.

Interestingly, such "hatred" should be expected by true Christians in this time of the end, and it actually helps identify Jehovah's Witnesses as Christ's true disciples:
(John 15:19) If you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hates you.
(Luke 6:22) Happy are you whenever men hate you, and whenever they exclude you and reproach you and cast out your name as wicked for the sake of the Son of man.
(1 Peter 4:4) Because you do not continue running with them in this course to the same low sink of debauchery, they are puzzled and go on speaking abusively of you.
(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.
It seems signficant that the relatively small religion of Jehovah's Witnesses are the ones best known for their worldwide preaching work. Yet Jesus commanded that ALL who would call themselves "Christian" perform this public work:
(Matthew 28:19,20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.

I give the Jehovah Witnesses the thumbs up for being on point with evangelizing. I don't really see much other people going out and walking the streets and knocking on doors so faithfully. Unfortunately they need to get it together when it comes to doctrine. I don't agree with much of what they say and they have changed many parts of the bible when the bible clearly says DO NOT ADD OR TAKE OUT!

I don't know if I'd call it despise. But I do dislike them. I go the other way when I see them coming because they just latch on and won't let go. They're everywhere on campus. Sometimes they'll follow you around until you make an appointment with them so they can come talk to you. The way they try and share their faith is overwhelming and uncomfortable. I already know I don't agree with what they teach, I don't need them trying to persuade me to think otherwise.

All you people that do not agree with Jehovah's Wittnesses please do me a favor. ..... Go get your bible and please go to these following scriptures: Exodus 6:3, Psalms 83:18. This should open your eyes. If you knew your religion and bibile so well, then tell me how you missed God's name? All they are trying to do is help you and everyone persists on staying stubborn when they don't even know their own religion and where they get it from. If you need help, let me know.

Man, I hate it when at 7 am one of them strangers approached me in the parking lot of a grocery store after I've purchased an item or two to take to work with me. Damn! I want to cuss the stranger out for that. I mean, I'm in a hurry. It's the crack of dawn. This stranger come darting at me with a magazine in hand.
One time, one of those strangers virtually snuck up on me. Holy Sh*t! I said. Where the hell did you come from and what the hell are you doing sneaking up on me like that!!! Don't you know how rude that is? Get away from me!
Then, they have the nerve to say, "God bless you."
Sheesh!
Another time on a Saturday morning, two men (and young and an older man) knocked on my door. As soon as I answered the door, I immediately told them I was not interested. The young man blurted out, "Don't you care about world peace?"
Sheesh!
I hate that crap!

Dispise isn't the word that I would use. I don't accept the beliefs.
They teach to many wrong things:
Jesus wasn't devine, he was the Archangel Michael
only 144,000 people in Heaven - everyone else is in "paradise"
Oh, I could go on, but why? That should be enough to not believe a "Christian" cult right there.

The negative responses are to be expected as they are representative of the "world" of Satan in general.
Jesus said: “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hates you. . . . But they will do all these things against you on account of my name, because they do not know him that sent me.”—John 15:18-21.

Because of the attitude that everyone else is from false religions amongst other things. Strongly disagree rather than despise and definitely not hatred.
