1) Exercise, particularly strength training. The after-effect for calorie burn after weight training lasts for 1 - 3 days after your last set (although it's somewhat minimal, it does help). Cardiovascular activities also speed up your metabolism, but to a lesser extent (although you burn more calories through cardiovascular activities)

2) Eat several small meals. Spread your food throughout the day and eat 6 - 8 small meals. Your metabolism speeds up because your body is digesting food, which in of itself, uses calories.

3) Eating protein and fat -- they take longer to digest, thus forcing your body to work harder. In addition, they help you feel fuller, longer. Be sensible, but at the same time, know that you are getting some benefits from eating a handful of nuts.

4) Caffeine. Again, most people abusive this and think more is better. A small amount of caffeine can stimulate your metabolism.

For me, the key has always been exercise. For instance, I ran about 11.5 miles last night. My metabolism is super-cranked this morning and will likely be for most of the day.

Good luck and hope I've helped.

In a discussion with a nutritionist just the other day, she said that if you eat small meals or snacks more regularly, say every 2 to 3 hours and go about your normal day, but change a few things, your metabloism will go up and so burn off more fat.
Instead of parking the car right where you want to go, park a little further away and walk the distance. Don't drive to get the newspaper, walk to the shop. Climb the stairs instead of using the elevator. Do 2 or 3 trips to the clothesline instead of carrying one big load.
It all contributes to building up your metabolism.
