I have read several references to them but can find nothing concrete about their history. Anyone have any information that might be helpful in finding out more about them?

Briefly: there was an existing community of Jews in Rome where the Vatican was first situated by the Catholic Church. Because Jesus was himself a Jew, The Pope found it unseemly to simply deport these Jews so that a church worshipping a martyred Jewish carpenter could be built. The Pope had the political power to do this. He simply chose not to. Hence, their existence near the Papal See was tied directly to The Pope's will - they became "The Pope's Jews".

Much much more ... over 800 years ... but this is the beginning.

In the late 1800' (around 1890 something) there was a big push in America to pass a National Sunday Law. The Jews in this country went along with it, and were ready to give up their Sabbath. This may be what you are looking for.
