No, it's from physical damage. In most cases, the toes are destroyed by having plastic or sting wrapped around them and cutting off the circulation. Pigeons sometimes walk thru this stuff in cities and it tangles onto them. Sometimes, they try to use it to make nests with and it wraps around them.

Truly wild pigeons, i.e., pigeons that live on cliffs or in wild areas away from cities and people's garbage and trash, don't have this problem. Rarely, if ever, will you find pigeon toes missing or their feet damaged in such situations. The damage is almost 99.999% caused by human garbage and trash.

Pigeons are extremely hardy birds, but even they can't handle that.

Most commonly out of simple encounters with human kind.

Then there's predators (falcons eat pigeons for example), mating competitions, accidents in nature and frostbite (it's rare, given their counter-current heat echange system on their legs, but not unheard of, tissue can still freeze).

You are doing a great job but a word of warning on the release of your bird. It is illegal to release a bird wild or otherwise.Even if it was wild when you caught it! I saved an Owl from the middle of a road that had been stunned by a car.I rang a rescue about how to realease it 2 days later and they told me I couldn't because it was illegal. I took it back to where I found it and realeased it in the dark.It was an Owl after all!

I often see pigeons with wire or string wrapped around their feet..not sure if they walk through this stuff and get tangled or if there are some pigeons haters out there that do it to them.

Getting hit by trains.. I saw one ge hit once- I was waiting for the train in Jamaica NY, and this pigeon flew in front of a passing train and its foot got cut off. It was ok- no blood or anything.

They also food fight other birds which is a common reason to lose their toes.
