I took my 11 month old to Mexico with a passport. Everything is the same, except their passports will expire in fewer years than yours will. Theirs will look just like yours, photo and all. Too cute.
The main branch of your post office will be able to help you. You can also get pictures taken much cheaper at Wal-Mart and bring those with you. ( I think you need two copies, and tell the photographer it is for a passport- they use a special background)

You must apply for their passports in the designated agency there in USA. Ask for guidance from the US department Passporting
