low fat carbohydrates and protein....pasta, peanut butter, eggs, etc. No food with high sugar content as the sugar burns off and leaves you feeling tired.

that may depend on that type of workout you are doing.

If you are weight-training, the experts recommend a few different things:

1> you could eat a meal 2-3 hours before training. this meal should consist of a source of lean protien (chicken, fish, lean beef...) and some complex carbohydrates (whole wheat break, whole wheat pasta, sweet potatos...)

2> consume a whey protien shake 30-45 minutes prior to training during a weight-training session your body uses Branch-chain amino acids (BCAA's) as its primanry energy source, not carbohydrates. This is also true for cardio sessions lasting 30-45 minutes. Whey protien is high in BCAA's.

if you are doing an extended work-out session (cardio over 1 hour, weight + cardio) then you should consume some more BCAA's after an hour or training or between your cardio and weight sessions.

Whole grain pasta or whole wheat bread is good right before working out. Protein is good to keep you full for a while. So, a grilled chicken sandwich on wheat would be perfect!
