Surely you should refer to the name of Jehovah by his proper title of God?

Jehovah is an english rendering of God's name and just like the name Jesus that is pronounced different in other languages, Jehovah is the english pronouncation of God's name. Personally, I think God is okay with that.

Not taking the Lord's name in vain does not make it less by omitting his name when should he is vainly spoken of.

It is true that the Almighty did not say, "Listen, thousands of years from now when a new language called English comes along, they can pronounce my name as 'Jehovah' and that's fine."
Instead, like with any and every personal name, different languages TRANSLATE personal names to fit their lingual tendencies. George becomes "Hor-hey" in Spanish or "Gay-org" in German and no one gets upset.
It's not exactly wrong to call the Almighty by the impersonal "God" or even "G-d", just as it's not wrong to call one's offspring "Child". If we want a familiar and close relationship, however, it makes sense to use the personal name of someone we love. The Scriptures encourage us to use God's personal name.
The Hebrew name “Yahweh” (or “Yehowah”) does seem to accurately pronounce the divine name. Just as the Hebrew name “Yeshua” (or “Yehoshua”) is translated into “Jesus” in English, the Hebrew name “Yahweh” is translated into “Jehovah” in English.
The important thing is to use God’s personal name in whatever language you speak, rather than insisting upon the impersonal! The name “Yahweh” is certainly preferable to the non-name “God” or “Lord”. If you speak English, feel free to use the name "Jehovah".

One of the 10 Commandments is 'do not take the Lord's name in vain'. In order to avoid this, Jews took the name of God, and removed the vouls from Yahweh to make YHWH. And it has been carried over from that as a sign of reverence, not embarrassment

ty - you're mistaken. taking out the vowels was done by someone (not sure if it was done by jews or cristians) to help it better parrallel the word it is translating.
as mom explained, we don't write it b/c of "Taking G-d's name in vain".
There is a debate in the jewish community whether than includes english terms which refer to Him, and whether "writing" on the computer is considered part of that. However, since it's not a big deal, we just go the extra mile to be safe.

the notion is that it is taking god's name in vain to type it in an unholy setting where it will be erased from the screen. By not typing the whole word, those people avoid the word's being erased.
god, though, is a title. jehova is just a bad mistransliteration nad misunderstanding.

There are some people who think their God really cares about what they say on Yahoo answers. And they 'sensor' God's name so it's not taken in vain. A bunch of paranoids, and perhaps psychotic, people I say.

Whose god is that, Peter? You can spell his name any way you want, as far as I'm concerned. If he doesn't like the way you spell it, he can turn you into a toadstool, if he wants! And who says what the "proper title of God" is? Those guys who wrote the books? I think his name is Samir.

actually "GOD" is the english word and basically was taken from Pagans who had several GODS.. so basically Christians decided to call their God by the name GOD.. if you do your homework you will find out that GOD isnt actually his name - ALLAH is more correct or infact there is an even older name of which is Yahwey

In the Jewish religion it is considered wrong to write the full name of God because then it could be erased, and that is forbidden.

This is out of reverence and respect. I call Him my Heavenly Father. Some call Him Lord Almighty.
