Well, I can speak in regards to the universities in the UK. I have never been there to study there. I could only speak about a few here in the states.

As for the better engineering degree to go for. Both are wonderful fields to work for and I am sure you might enjoy either. I guess we have to go back to the basic question, what do you enjoy. With civil you will be dealing with the land, forming it and getting it ready for those to build on it. With architectural you will be creating a building or parts of it. I am a structural engineer and I build power plants. So look at each field and determine that basic part of it. Decide what is going to fulfill you more. Last don't look at the money aspect of it all. Chose what is going to make you happy. One should always love his work and be proud of it.

Architecture is more art than science whereas Civil Engineering is heavy on the math & material sciences. Ever see an aethstetically pleasing off-ramp or storm drain? There you go. Both have good opportunities for getting a professional credential and forming your own business if that's important to you.

Look up "famous building" or "beautiful home" in the web then look up "construction project". If you study the trades, something about one or the other will grab you. And you can always switch later if you want, the fields have some crossover.

Civil Engineering is the more difficult and most use full as it relates to mass infrastructure projects.but less well paid and glamorous

Architecture is less use full but much more glamorous and well paid if you do well (but not well paid if you stick as assistant). if you want UK specific answers post on the UK answers
