Not all Satanists are evil. Some simply believe that Satan is more just and fair than God. Remember, in the Old Testament, God wasn't so all forgiving and many of the punishments he handed out to people were very harsh considering the "infraction". Some would even say he was spiteful and downright mean. Satan on the other hand deals with "sinners" on a calculated scale (ie: the levels of Hell). If you commit A then you are punished with B. Its more cut and dry/back and white. I'm not saying this is the right choice, just offering you an answer to the question.

I actually saw where this whole satanist religion started. It started in the 1960's. This guy was trying to sensationalize a religion. It was centered around being selfish. He invented the satanic bible and the odd rituals. I actually saw the documentary on tv just the other day. He was in California. After he started this religion it kinda had a life of its own. Yes people can choose this religion, but it was really centered around being selfish rather than being evil. Black magic and evil wicca is more focused on being evil. They believe in the forces of evil and more than just satan. Like anything they also have a choice and can choose good over evil, but for some they pay quite the price.

Satanists don't believe in the devil or evil at all.
They think that the idea of the devil was made up by Christians.
They do the things that they do to make fun of people who believe in evil.
It may surprise you to know that many of the most moral people I have ever met don't believe in God or the devil.
They see it as their duty to treat others in a loving compassionate way just because that is the only thing that makes any sense from a logical perspective.
They don't need the threat of Gods judgment and punishing ideas to live a loving and productive life.
In my mind these are the only true adults. They live a life based on the ideas taught by Jesus just because that is the kind of person they want to be.
They don't need any childish threats of a punishing God to keep them in line.
This way of living ones life is beyond the comprehention of many who call themselves christians.
Love and blessings

Most people have been brought up to love each other and play nice and all that. You're probably a Christian, and you've been told Satan is bad. Well Satanists don't see it that way. Some of them are just fed up with Christian ways, or other religions in general. Some of them have just had terrible lives. Some of them are just raised to be Satanists- just like you were raised to be whatever religion you were raised to be.
Bottom line is, Satanism is a religion like any other. It just gets bagged a lot more.

It's not that they are choosing evil with lightening flashing in the background wearing an evil looking cape. Their religion teaches more that there really isn't a good or evil per se. You are supposed to do what you want to satisfy yourself. So yes, they do chose evil (satisying yourself, as your number one priority is evil, and they do this because all humans have a basic inclination to evil) but they do not necesarrily consider what they are doing is evil.

Or could some of the people that you label Satanist really be pagans? Pagans are not synonymous with Satanists. They don't worship God, true. But their deity is seldom what we would call Satan. Some worship Odin, some worship the sacred feminine. Are they misguided?
Judge not...and all that.

Satanist, in the mold of Anton LeVay, reject the notions of good and evil as others understand it. There is right and there is wrong in their eyes.
Other Satanists (those who claim to worship Satan) are rebelling.

Youre a judgemental little hypocrite arent you? anyways satanists beleive that you should question the God you serve be it *good* or evil. the question should be why are christians too cowardly to question the evil thier God has done?

i dont know. but serving evil is just stupid. sorry for the context, but it is. have you ever seen movies were the evil guy treats all his minions like dirt, but the good guy treats his companions like gold. that is exactly the same thing with god and the devil.
