This is just a myth created by certain people (you know who) to justify their atrocities and arrogance. God doesn't prefer any group, we are all equal before God.

First, it is rather blasphemous to attempt to understand God's plan. Saying that......here is my 2 cents on why I would do it.
I don't think God really has a people he prefers more than the others. I believe that everyone thinks they are the "chosen people". If indeed, one of them actually is, I can't think of any special reason why.
All cultures are pretty much the same, except for a few differences that give them identity. If God were to play favorites, he would have to favor a group solely because of that group's "special differences". However, I don't believe this because I don't think God would favor a group simply because they don't eat pork on Friday, or don't dance on weekdays.
More than likely, God likes everyone the same and its the cultures that are claiming they are loved more.
I guess the only way someone could "test" this issue would be to take one person from every culture and put them in a field in a thunderstorm. Whoevers cultural representative is left standing wins.

There is a pantheon of gods. Each of these gods had a certain group of chosen people. The god of the Hebrews was a god called Yahweh. The survival of a god depended on the outcome of wars. If you lost a war your temples, shrines, priests etc. were destroyed. The Jews got lucky and lasted up until the Romans. Christianity got adopted by the Romans who just happened to be the greatest empire at their time and they spread Christianity. That is how Yahweh survived and was spread.
It's still all nonsense though.

Noah and Abraham were born after Adam and Eve were created and passed sin onto every offspring.
Noah was a righteous man.
Abraham was a righteous man. So it is more like Abraham choose God's way.
God needed some one who would do his will and have his children after him do the same. Jesus was #62 in the genealogy from Adam, 42 from Abraham.
Heb.9:14,16; This is what it is all about, Jesus will have the right to end Satan, and the death that he has caused. 1Cor.15:22; As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Heb.9:27; It is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgement.
We all need to be like Noah and Abraham, some one God can rely on.

I would say god probably wouldn't do such a thing, however, every ancient culture felt their gods had chosen their people as "special." Even today, the theme is common with modern religions. Our version of is the right way, everybody else is wrong.
It is unlikely that god would take part in that type of human pettiness.

God begins to work with the basics, when He wanted the Earth to be filled he created two people with the capacity to fill the Earth, he didn't have to create 1 billion people. So it was the same when he wanted to show His love to the world, He got a group and said listen i want to show the world i love them so am going to start with you so that when they see, they will come to me.
Its not about people its about God. He says in His word that He is no respector of persons to Him we are all the same and his love is the same for in Him there is no partiality. He is perfect.

His chosen people are those that accept, follow, and obey His Word. Everyone has been given the opportunity to do that. It's up to you to accept or reject His offer to be apart of His chosen people.

Hey there are lotsa evil in this world and His rival is sure doing a great job so probably to guide us to Him. Of course, He choses special people for the huge responsibility so that peace, love, joy, and awe of the Lord would be here on this world.

I guess he has favoritism too...
but we're all chosen for the gift of Salvation - so, it really doesn't matter anymore...Jew & Gentile alike. He's God over both...
The Israelites are his "chosen people"...I 'guess' (because nobody can actually answer that question for 'certain'...) mainly because they are where Christ lineage derives.
Just a guess.
