AUM, if you talk about it in the pure Spiritual Sense, then it is the sound of the Brahm or the Supreme unmanifested Godhead who is omnipresent, this sound is all pervading as the Brahm is all pervading, Infact aum is nothing but the Brahm and it is a popular belief in Hinduism to meditate on this SHABD Brahm or the Eternal Sound in order to achieve peace and Salvation. So, it is used for the sacred Chanting by the Hindus.
Aum consists of 3 basic sounds: A, OO, AND M. In SANSKRIT, if we combine these three syllables we get aum(om).
If you talk in the Scientific and Physical Sense, the AUM is the continuous humming sound produced by the earth as it revolves and rotates in the Solar System around its axis. Few Scintific researches have certified that earth is producing some sort of a humming sound every second and all the time.
I hope this satisfies your querry to a lager extent.

I think it mean... I AM the sound you make saying Aum are supposed to vibrate the different chakra energy centres I do believe..this was told to me by an old hippy man who did a lot of chanting and who wore his hair long and had a long beard so I'm sure he knew what he was talking about.

It's supposed to represent the sound that everything in the universe makes at once. All the chaos cancels one another out and you're left with a steady hummmm, or om. It's used to help you cancel out any distractions while meditating. If you're "making all the sounds in the universe," one extra sound won't hurt. In theory...

Om is a symbol that represents the stages of life, and the existance of our mind. We have the waking, the conscience, sub-conscience, dreaming, the veil, and then we have enlightenment. It is also considered the Sound Of Creation. As it is pronounced =AHH-OOO-MMM-"Silent". Different pitches will be different energies as well.
