The Mauser 98 is definitely on the list of all time greatest military rifles, and probably worked well as a sniper rifle, as did the M1903 Springfield, as they are very similar rifles. Probably the most visible are those based off of the Winchester model 70 and Remington Model 700, both in .308 caliber, both originally bought stock from the manufacturers. The Marine COrps currently uses the M40A3, which is based on the remington 700, .300 WinMag caliber, and are custom made by the Marine Corps Small Arms Labratory in MCB Quantico, VA. Some other excellent rifles include the Heckler and Koch PSG-1, which was first produced in the Mid-80's, and chambered for the NATO .308 caliber, but can be chambered for almost any caliber the buyers chooses. The British Army, Royal Marines and SAS currently use the Accuracy International L115A1 in a .338 Lpua caliber, nicknamed the "Super Magnum" Below is a website that lists sniper rifles from accross the world, not necesarrily a comparison between them, as the mission determines the rifle, and not the other way around.

Possibly, there aren't that many sniper rifle versions. Soviet equipped use Dragunovs, U.S. equipped use m24 and m82.
