Port-Au-Prince is in many ways safer. Even the "good" areas of DC are being overrun with crime. People are being robbed on the National Mall!!!

With Port-Au-Prince, you know that you are at risk, and if you choose to go there, you should protect yourself. DC is trying to tell tourists that it is still safe and wonderful!!!

People tend to forget that D.C. has an inner city and the associated problems with decay, poverty and crime that often go hand-in-hand. The better job we do dealing with these problems in earnest and stop treating them like something that can be contained in the "wrong" parts of town (people live there too), the less crime we will have, and the better off we'll all be for it. It's time to start treating the inner city's problems as our own.

No, I wouldn't.
I would call it the last TERRITORY of the USA.

Washington DC is the only place in the USA where people pay taxes but have not voting representation in either the House of Representatives or Congress. There is Elinore Holmes Norton, the D.C. representative, but she is a nonvoting member.

Like most things in the news, the DC crime emergency has been overhyped. Yes, there's crime - like in any city. Yes, it gets worse in the summer - like everywhere else. Yes, tourists get mugged - like in other cities that have a lot of tourism. It's all in the news right now because there was a murder/robbery in an upper-class neighborhood, which is unusual.

It's a city like any other city in the world. You have to be smart and use your head.

No. There are plenty of high crime cities-- Detroit, for example. It's not that bad. There are good parts of town and 'bad' parts of town. People from the struggling 'bad' parts of town occasionally wreak havoc on the good parts of time. That's a side-effect of capitalism.

14 homicides? That's what they would call "a slow day" in Baghdad - their body count is around 1000/month.

DC has crime, but is not much worse than most major cities in the United States.

I think everyone in DC is just power hungry.

Murder will always be a problem in the big cities in the US. I don't know how we can solve this problem.
