Tigers were big, slow tanks.(German)- but very effective tanks.
The UK Cromwell III and IV were fast for a heavy tank @ 51.5 mph tops. But there were NOT the fastest tank- wikipedia is wrong.
The US m18 Hellcat tank destroyer had a top speed of 80.4 mph, but it's not a tank. It's a tank destroyer, so it's out of the running here.
The US Shermans weren't so fast at about 40 mph.
The US M-24 Chaffee light tank could go 56.3 mph.
But the Soviet BT-5 had a top speed of 72 mph, and the BT-7 had a top speed of 86 mph.
Therefore, the fastest tank that is actually a TANK and not a destroyer or other AFV (amored fighting vehicle) was the BT-7
The BT series were very thinly armored and lightly gunned by comparison to the later tanks both the Russians and Germans produced.
Probably the best combination of speed , armament and armor was the Soviet T-34 series. These tanks were so fast and effective that when the Soviets put them out on the field, the Germans they attacked hardly knew what to do, and had to resort to aircraft, artillery, or plain old infantry attacks on these beasts.

Fast really doesn't matter in a real tank.. but if you include tank destroyers, i do believe it was the m18 Hellcat tank destroyer at 88 km per hour.

hmm well the Sherman was very lightly armored which leaves me to believe it was fast but the German Panzers and Tiger were monsters so i dunno. I think Russia had a pretty good tank too Actually Russia and Germany had the largest Tank battle in world history.

The U.S. M-3 light tank could do 45 mph on a road .
Unfortunately you could punch holes in one with a .50 cal machine gun.
