my cat use to be so welcoming and social but now, when i come home he won't welcome me as it did before and all he does is sleep. I try being extra kind to him, giving him extra treats and giving him more attention. NOTHING IS WORKING.
i know i still love my cat SOOOO much, but he's not the same as before...

As cats get older they tend to do this . My cat is 9 and a few years ago he was a lot more playful and ran to the door when I came in , now if I want to pet him I have to go to the pillow he sleeps on in the window that overlooks the back yard. Your cat is just becomming an old man. We also have an 8 month old cat and she will not leave me alone... or the dog.. or the kids ... or the curtains... or the laundry.

I'd recommend you take him to the vet for a checkup just to be sure there are no health issues underlying the behavior change. My cat was sick and had some pretty subtle changes like this...didn't want to be picked up, wanted to just lie under the table and look at me but didn't want pats when I came over, started finding odd places to hide/sleep in.

The vet can do a physical exam and also check some blood work like glucose and thyroid levels...you might want to bring in a stool sample if you can get one, especially if your cat's diet or box habits have changed at all. It shouldn't cost too much to assess him...I managed to afford it on my <$20,000/yr income when my kitty was sick this year (btw, turned out he had rather significantly elevated liver enzymes probably due to an intestinal inflammation...antibiotics, prednisone, and a diet change helped for him).

could be a number of things..too many treats and poor nutrician, you may need to change his diet to suit his age and issues...he could just be older and wants a little more space and will come to you when he wants affection...he could not be feeling well...cats have a tendency to stay away or wonder off more when they do not feel well...i would call the vet and ask them some questions..they'll probably ask you first how old the cat is, the diet, was this a sudden change in behavior or gradual, etc. cll the vet..it certainly couldn't hurt!
good luck

Your cat's vet should be alerted to any changes in a cat's personality. He could be in pain or could have something else medically wrong with him. This should always be the first thing you do when you notice something different or unusual with your cat or any pet for that matter.

Same thing happened to my cat! HE's just getting older and dosent need attention as much and dosent play as much as he used to. Dont worry he still loves you too.

It could be lots of things,he could want more excitement like going outside,or simply want a mate,or he could of ate something that slowed him down,if your gone a lot he could feel neglected,or maybe try living him alone for a while if hes sleeping let him sleep, let him come to you.

I might agree with the nutrition idea...but if you're sure s/he's not sick/old or anything then try giving it more attention by using new toys not by treats...

Who knows, it might work ;-)

Has anything else changed around the house? How about his nutrition?

If the change was sudden, he might be getting sick. Ask a vet about it.
