We remember the song about the kookooaburra and the gum tree, like eating all the gum drops it can see, I know this isn't the candy gum drops. Is this some sort of sap or something?

The 'gum' you are referring to is the sticky secretion the comes out of the trunk of the gum tree when its bark is removed or is striked too hard.

The gum the song refers to is the sap that seeps from cuts in the bark. Hardened clumps of this sap are called gum it was chewed by Native Americans and the early pioneers. Today there are still some people who chew it.

Gum in a gum tree is VERY hard to get out, even when washed several times.

NO! dont even try to it's toxic! the only thing that can eat anything off a gum tree is a koala. It eats the leaves - thats where it gets its water from

it is a sap
some plants have tendency to form such a fluids
they are helpful to plants when their branches are broken by winds (somewhat like repairing work)
