If it is, please show me in the bible where it states that. All I can find says that our debts are to be forgiven after 7 yrs and another said that a man was forgiven his debt yet turned around and wouldn't forgive another man his debt so he was thrown in jail until his debt was re-paid. Sorry for the run-on. Thanks.

The fact is that I had a miscarriage last fall and depressed. Late on a $60 bill and with all finance charges, late fee, etc. It turned to a $300 bill the day it was late. In trying to catch up on that, got behind on others which resulted in the same thing. No way to catch up and in my state they don't go to collections, they go to court. One card is planning to take almost a whole paycheck each month. Then what about the others, household bills, food, etc.? I can't think of any other way.

Sorry, one more thing. Isn't it all about forgiveness and repentance? We repent, God forgives? We've already learned how to live without cards and are trying to pay as much stuff as we can. I don't want to file on everything. Just the unmanagable.

No bankruptcy is not a sin. Evidently you have misused your money to end up this way and you've made a mistake. Turn from these ways, get back on track and if you can try to repay those you claimed as debtors in your bankruptcy. It may take a long time but the clear conscience will be well worth it and if you have any children it would set a great example. If you continue to use bankruptcy as a scapegoat then yes that is a sin. But if it was your only out and your honestly trying to get back in control, that is not a sin. But I'm sure God would want you to make good with your debtors as best as you can. Money is not evil, its the love of money that is evil. Watch your spending and spend with in your means, check out "money matters and crown financial or Larry Burkett's financial books. Good Christian teaching on money.

I don't think it is a sin. Sometimes people get in over their heads and need a help out. What I think is bad about bankruptcy is the people who will spend spend spend for about 7-10 years and than file bankruptcy and than do it all over again. As mean as it sounds I think there should be a limit to how many times you can file for bankruptcy. Some people just abuse the system.

The Bible also says that we should owe no man, and doesn't look kindly on borrowing money, either, especially when we don't repay it. It ruins a Christians testimony when a Christian fails to pay something as promised; it makes us less trustworthy.

Of course, sometimes bankruptcy is the only way debts can be resolved.

No. In fact the bankruptcy laws, as are most of our laws, comes from the Bible, which states that a person is to be forgiven of their debts in every 7th year.

Nehemiah 10:31

and [that] we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.

Bankruptcy is not a sin. It is like asking if failing is a sin (it is not).

You may have ended up bankrupt as a result of doing things that may be regarded sinful, but that is another matter.

Bankruptcy is regarded as a sin by money-grabbing religions because bankrupt people don't have any money to donate towards the preacher's new BMW

No, bankroptcy isn't a sin. That was a parable given by Jesus regarding people who are hypocrites/unforgiving.

Matt. 18:23-35:
Matthew 23"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[g] was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26"The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' 27The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.[h] He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.

29"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'

30"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."
