One of those $10 hand held video games from Wal Mart. Like,
Yahtzee,Boggle,Poker. If he's laying in bed hurting, he may not feel like reading , but most 14 year olds I know love games, especially electronic ones. Plus you don't need a tv or electicity to keep it plugged into.
And maybe lots of magazines of his interest to go with it. Light reading. Or puzzle books, sudoku, crossword, seek and find.

As a book, try The Alchemist by Coelho. Or perhaps a comic book that will be fun/ny.
Alternatively, can you get him a game he can play by himself or with people who visit? Or if he doesn't have a music player with him, he may appreciate something in that realm.

Well if you do get him a book make sure it is one that teaches a moral of being brave, strong, and coming against the odds due to his situation...that should give him something to do while he is there and teach him not to feel sorry for hisself (depending on the situation) Hope he Gets Well Soon!! :)

You can get him an Ipod depending on his likes. It is best to focus on what you think he enjoys and get a logical gift that he can use while in hospital to take his mind off the pain he is in.

If you know his hobbies, some magazines in his field would be nice. A fruit basket is a nice gift, too.

I would buy him a stack of comic books and an easy to read bible comic book, which you would probably have to search harder for, but they are available
