It is HARD. I have had lots of male friends over the years, but the trick is being honest about attraction up front, and defining the relationship outright. If you're the least bit attracted to the other person, then as your friendship grows, your attraction will grow too, and you'll have to renegotiate the boundaries. However, the best lovers and partners in life are also friends -- having a real friendship first helps a relationship last.

Definately - if you have that kind of relationship then that's great. Personally my best friend is male (I'm female) and we grew up together and have been friends for 28 years now, we may not see each other every day as we have done in the past but every time we meet it is just the same as when we lived next door to one another.
It is probably more difficult to "be friends" if there was more than that to a relationship previously.
