There are many wonderful parents out there but some just leave me completely shocked at the lack of actual parenting they do.

They then wonder why thir kids grow up as little disrespectful thugs.

Should it be compulsory to complete a parenting course and prove that you are responsible enough to to nurture and bring up a young human being ?

I don't know about a license, but I think ALL pregnant women and their partners should be REQUIRED to attend parenting classes. Especially the really young ones, and those who haven't had any kids before.

And I don't mean the run of the mill "lamaze crap" class. I mean an honest to goodness... this is what you should and shouldn't do to your child... kind of class. Similar to driver's ed. But much more intense.

No. The idea is fine, but just because you get a license, doesn't make you a responsible parent. Do you know how easy it is to trick the system? People do it all the time. There will never be a such thing as a perfect parent. The people who think they are perfect parents, have a problem already. I agree, there are a lot of parents out there who should not be parents at all. with this idea of your, is this just for women? Just curious as to how you will contain the sperm from a man...

I am a first time parent of a surprise baby. The general idea is good, but in all actuality, unreasonable. How would you enforce the not getting pregnant part? Unless you kidnap women and force them to use birth control that usually only 95 - 99% effective and against some religions....The whole affording one thing - unless you are one of the few rich people in the world, you can't ever really afford a child. Again, as good of an idea as it is, it just isn't feasible.

I think that is a great idea and completely reasonable, like taking a driving course before you get your driver's license!

However, it would be harder to enforce because it's not like they have a Department of Parenting or something that you have to register with the moment you think you might want to have kids. And what happens if a woman gets pregnant by accident or raped and becomes pregnant? While it is a good idea, it seems a little impractical in that respect.

Why not? We require a license before you get behind the wheel of a car due the damage to life if you don't know the rules of the road and aren't regularly tested. Having a child is no less a responsibility. If you are not a repsonsible person, cannot financially support a child, or have contributed to the deliquency of one or more other children, why shouldnt we care enough to protect new lives from the irresponsible nature?

Best! :-)

I think reproductive rights are too sacred to be taken away. It's a very, very, very slippery slope. First you say you have to take a childcare course and get a license. Does that mean to have sex? Or does that mean that if you don't pass you get an abortion.
And who do you keep from having kids? I have a genetic disease that might be passed down to my children - should I be prohibited? Then what about people of very low intelligence? Then what about people who don't have blond hair?
You see what I mean? There's just no moral, practical way to apply such a law.

No.

How would you enforce it? Would it be against the law to have sex unless you had completed the course? Would you take away the baby of anyone who didn't take and pass the course.

The whole idea is rather silly. Besides, passing a test doesn't make you qualified for anything, it just means you can memorize enough material to pass a test.

I've seen great parents turn out little criminals and horrible inattentive people have the sweetest kids. I think it doesn't depend on your parenting style as much as whether your child chooses to follow you or do the opposite of what you teach. Plus, the human race has been getting on all right so far without parenting restrictions.

Well i think that does sound like a good idea. Ive seen parents who shouldnt be trusted with a pet much less a human being. But I have seen some of my friends who have great loving parents who get them everything. Give hugs and kisses and they turn out doing drugs and stealing. I think it has alot to do with there friends to be perfectly honest with you.

Some research suggests that abuse, neglect and otherwise poor parenting skills are a result of ignorance. They just don't understand what is appropriate at what ages. I think all high schoolers should have to take a class in child development.
