But seriously, IF you are going this, AND want to do it from a high height, learn to land like a parachutist. The best way to do that is to take a one-day parachute ground school taught anywhere there is a drop site with planes taking people aloft. Ask any local pilot - drop zones are clearly marked on aviation charts. Or look in the yellow pages.

Briefly, parachutists distribute the force of the impact over more of their body and over a longer time by collapsing their body as they hit the ground.

As their feet hit, their knees are already bent and they fall to one side and contact their shins and then thighs with the ground, they continue to fall to the side and roll so that their chests and finally their shoulders contact the ground. So instead of taking 0.02 seconds for 0.5 square feet of their soles to absorb the impact, it takes something like 0.3 seconds for 5 square feet to absorb the same energy.

A parachustist landing is similar to jumping off a one-story roof.

When done well, it is an exciting, pat-yourself-on-the-back moment. At times, I have rolled back up on the other side and sprung to my feet again. Done wrong or just being unlucky and you twist an ankle or break your tibia, etc.

The other group of people who learn how to fall down properly are martial arts - Karate, Tie-Kwan-Do, etc. Even if you don't want to beat anyone up nor defend yourself, knowing how to fall well can save you from injury if you trip, slip on ice or, especially, when you age and your bones are more brittle.

If you try to land on your head, you will break save your legs. :-) That was just a joke :-) Here is some real suggestion. A human body, when falling freely will tend to rotate and fall on its head, so jump in such a way that you streamline yourself and go feet down first. The moment you touch ground, be ready to start, sitting down, so that some momentum of the fall is taken up by that action. And finally, when you are almost on your haunches, try to fall on one side and roll, to further use the momentum of the jump from hurting you.

Maybe you can try landing on BOTH of your feet at the same time and then roll on the ground. (I cant describe it, but thats what they do in the air force after paraschuting)
