Most professional photographers that I speak with recommend Canon.

I recently looked at all these cameras and read many professional and amateur reviews. They all get strong recommendations, and they each have some characteristics better and worse than the others. But most of the "faults" are small and hard to detect by an untrained eye.

Canon is a frequent favorite, based on its long history of success with film, digital, and professional cameras. It is mentioned as a "real camera company". But they have their minor flaws too.

Another camera In the same class is the Panasonic FZ30. It is a little bigger, and has manual zoom and focus rings on the barrel, like a d-SLR.

My conclusion: They are all very good and very close in overall results. So I bought based on features, feel in my hands, and price. I ended up with the Sony H1 (2005 version of the H2/H5) because of the larger LCD and better price.

I suggest that you go to camera stores and really hold the cameras and take some test pics. The camera needs to feel good to you. (I loved the bigger viewfinder and manual zoom/focus rings on the FZ30, but didn't like the heavier weight and bulk for carrying the camera around.)

Good Luck!

For a good look at these cameras scan

There seems to be a little concern about the Sony cameras with what is called chromatic abrasion (purple fringing). I really don't think most amateurs would really notice the problem.

As a matter of course I believe Canon (even with less mega-pixels) would be the better camera. Canon has a proven track record and seems to keep improving.

if it's between canon n sony in the 12X zoom category..i'd say canon. but just to let you know...canon cameras are not the best...i'm not trying to promote..but this is based on my experiance...nikon is the best...though nikon doesn't have a 12X zoom camera...the maximum nikon has for a digital camera is 10X zoom.but for an amateur, it's good enough as this camera will produce professional results...
if you want to know why i say nikon is the best and will satisfy you...read my answer to question "i need a new camera..help"

both very solid. both discontinued. I had owned at one time the Sony DSC-H2. i quite loved taking pictures with it; and not in any respect left it on vehicle. playstation The Sony DSC-H2 has aperture/shutter precedence, and if I reall so does the Canon S3 IS.
