Hi,
I've been working in the pet food industry for quite a while now and have dealt with Canidae.
Canidae is an excellent food, not the best out there, but it is definitely a good one. It uses whole fresh ingredients, does not have fillers or by-products, and is not owned by a mass market company.
Dogs can get UTIs from any food really and from other things as well. One of the easiest ways to prevent them is to ensure that they drink enough water. Having worked with Canidae, UTIs must be rare from the food because I have never heard of that complaint. Your vet probably had one case and is using it as an excuse to try and get you on one of their foods.
Like I said above, Canidae is a great food. I would never suggest that you switch because it is good but here are some other brands that are as good or better: Innova (by far the healthiest in the world), Wellness, Solid Gold, Fromm, Eagle Pack Holistic.
And, 4u2nv, if you read this, you have been a victim of yet another vet WHO KNOWS NOTHING about pet nutrition. You went from Canidae (probably an 8 or 9 out of ten as being healthy) to Pedigree which is probably a 2 or 3 on the healthy scale. Canidae has chicken, turkey, rice, lamb, herring, flaxseed. Pedigree has corn, chicken by-products, more corn, animal fat, and wheat. There is NO real meat in Pedigree, no nutritional value...nothing! This is why, as a pet nutrition consultant, I want people to understand that vets do not know anything about pet nutrition. I find it disgraceful and inhumane that a vet would tell someone to switch from something so good and healthy as Canidae to something as disgusting and unhealthy as Pedigree.
Anyways, stick with the Canidae, or if you do feel you need to switch, check out the other foods that I have listed because they are definitely as good or better.
THANK YOU for caring about your pets health!

I have heard of dogs not tolerating Canidae, but I would put total trust in the safety of their foods. If your dogs are having trouble with the food, I suggest another (flavor) version of the same brand, or trying a different brand. (I like Innova and California Naturals). I am sorry about your dog that passed away. I don't think that the brand of food would contribute to the bloat...my understanding is that genetics plays a big factor in it, and many people believe that the height of the feeding bowl plays in as well. What was your vet's opinion?

Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. BTW, I have also read about canidea and think it is a good brand,

I have three dogs and one cat. I had fed my dogs Canidae for quite some time exclusively. We recently changed however because we had our dogs tested for allergies and unfortunately Canidae had an ingredient that they were allergic to...chicken. Since then we have changed to Kirkland which seem to be perfect for them.
I still feel that Canidae as a great food ( our dogs have always been lean and healthy). You may want to have your pet tested for allergies (it's simple and inexpensive). Then you can choose a food that will fit them best.

Yes this is one of the better dogs foods available today.
I would not switch from it unless you are having problems.
I have never heard of UTI problems I do not think it would casue them. Dogs may get a UTI and be eating this food but that could happen with any food.
What you are feeding now is one of the best available and recommend by WHole Dog Journal and a veterniary nutritionst I know.
It is far beeter than anything available at the petsmarts and grocery stores.

Canidae is a dog food often recommended for dogs with orthopedic issues. When my one red Doberman blew her ACL, it was a highly recommended food. She never recovered from the surgery to correct the torn ACL, but I do know a lot of people were telling me to consider changing to that brand of food to help her.
Unfortunately, each dog is different. Key is to try to avoid by-product and filler -- and find a food that works well for your dog.

i have two labs that are fed candidae. we love it and so do the dogs. we fed it to the litter of pups last fall too. and recommended it to the respective buyers. i love it because i don't have to change it as the dog grows and i can feed it for all stages of life.
