It is a sickness, in that you did not choose to become depressed, it happened. The medicine is however to kind of snap out of it, as impossible as that sounds! (obviously there are drugs that do this also) When I say snap out of it, I am by no means under-estimating how hard this can be. Activities such as exercise, watching comedy, socialising are all things that can help. A good healthy diet is also really important. The food that most people eat in today's society does not have enough vitamins etc to keep us stable basically. Lots of carbs make you feel lethargic which can add to a sense of depression. Also being un-happy with your weight or appearance can have an affect on a persons self confidence, therefore could be depressing.

Sleep too much or too little can make depression worse. Try to get 8 hours per night.

Wow I should really listen to my own advice! The problem is, if you had the motivation to do all of this, you probably wouldn't be depressed! People should try as hard as they can to fight it personally, but also accept that they will probably need someone else to give them support. Depression does not have to be a long term illness.

Some of these answers are very good, I won't try to make much of an addition, other than to point out the ignorance and lack of empathy some idiots have by saying 'it's all in your head'. Brain tumors are in your head, that doesn't mean it's not an illness!

Having suffered from deppression for many years and taking many didderent forms of medication inc. SSRI's (Paroxatine, fluoxatine etc), older tricyclic meds such as Amitriptyline and many more I still SUFFER. And when Im down I'm down, and when I'm up I'm up and when I'm only half way up I'm neither up or down lol..

Sorry this is serious, try St Johns Wort - thats my current natural choice. It has had some good studies and appears to be as effective (for some) as Peroxitine whih has had numorous problems.

Bare in mind if taking SSRI's which are currently classed as none addictive etc - Valium was considered none addictive only a couple of decades ago, same story with Hypnotic sleepers (zopiclone) etc.

Try different things with your docs advise and see what works - excersise is probably the single best thing you can do to help yourself - as hard as it seems to get off the bed !!

You are not alone!!!!!!

Basically depression is a state of mind, which normally sets in after a long time of negative happenings/attitude/state of mind and normally one is not aware about it. Yes it can be shrugged off in the beginning simply by changing to a positive attitude either through auto suggestions or may be with the help of family or friend(s). Definitely family is a great support in such a state. However if you are unable to get rid of it, you may take help of a trained professional. The most important point is that more you delay on it more time it would take to go away. Nevertheless it is not impossible to get rid of it

Depression is an illness, the onset is slow and progresses to varing levels; most often cause by some form of crises / STRESS, but it can be of harmonal or chemical im-balances.

One should get help from their G.P. who may take a detailed history, followed by blood-tests such as Chem 22. These results will help in the diagnosis.

Treatment:---depends on the above findings, the GP. may choose to treat the cause or refer you to psychologist / psychologist or both.

However, depression must be treated early as possible.
In the early stages (your Q) you can get involved with others, continue to work, keep your mind occupied with constructive ideas tasks such as physical activities, join the gym, go for walks with others etc. These are things you can do, your GP may make suggestions.
Family and Friends may want to help / or ask for their help.

Difficult to say - there are different types of depression. Bipolar disorder and clinical depression are thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, in the 'physician heal thy self' school it is unknown as to whether positive thought can affect the balance. After all, the placebo effect is strong enough to provide apparent cures to various disorders.

During the initial stages of depression, you can still CHOOSE to get a grip and shake yourself out of it. But in worst cases of depression, it becomes an illness. So its both. I suggest you look at all the symptoms of depression so you can figure it out for yourself as well if its a mind-set or an illness.

Its more of a sickness, being in a deep hole and as you try to get out, the hole grows deeper. Depression makes you sick, cry, sleep and be no socialisable. Depression is caused by debts, money problems, job problems, family problems, past problems...

Ive been through years of depression. I try my hardest not to let it beat me. Some days it doesnt, other days it takes over everything and leaves me weak and very tired.

there are numerous types of depression, ranging from the everyday lethargy and anxiety most people feel, to the more extreme feelings of self loathing and futility.
if you find you can make yourself 'snap out of it', you probably werent clinically depressed which requires medicinal treatment.
in my opinion, some people are pre disposed to being depressed i.e. in its in the genetics and so i would class it as a sickness.

It's a chemical imbalance (sometimes just temporary, sometimes people are just more susceptible to it). It is a sickness, but positive thought is helpful in the process of getting out from underneath it.
