I am planning to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai via night train arriving in the morning. Should I book a place to stay first before leaving? or book it when I arrive? If you people do have places <$5 to recommend I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

It is not high season so you will have plenty of room choices.. if I read that correctly as less than $5 - then head for the Tapae gate and there are lots of inexpensive guesthouses in that area.

Also - the buses are far more comfortable than the train. Most have big comfy, reclining chairs etc.. get a vip bus.. go during the day and you can get to see a little too...

if you are arriving in the morning, then you have lots of time to find a place for the night. it's good cos you can see the room before you pay since you want a <$50 room and most of the rooms in CM are not as nice as in BKK. It also depends on where you you wanna live too. i'd recommend you to Karinthip Hotel. you can conveniently go to many places by local bus. it's only $38.50 though ... or check out http://www.excelloz.com. good site indeed.

good luck.

it depends on what time you arrive at the airport. if in the afternoon i think you can go to the railway station directly.

but if not i suggest you some hotels are near Hua Lum Pong Railway Station such as Prince Palace, Bangkok Centre and Shanghai Inn.

Or you can get the train at Don Muang Railway Station which is nearer the airport and the hotels around that such as Amari Airport, Comfort Suite Airport and Quality Suites Airport.
