What does it mean by 'free standing' e.g The Stratophere tower in Vegas is the tallest free standing tower in the USA.

it means there are no guide wires to help support the structure

It is a structure standing without any external supports.
Could be a building or other structures. For example some tower cranes may be erected to certain height without any external supports or being tied back to a building.
In which case it would be said to be free standing.

A free standing tower is basically a building atop a large column. The base is mainly elevators and at the top is the casino, etc.

The Tallest tower is the Burj Dubai in Dubai, it is 800 metres tall. I think it is not quite complete until sometime in December 2008. Amazing looking.
