Okay, first of all, if you actually have the patience to read BadGirl's response....DON"T listen to her. You can tell she actually knows nothing about pet nutrition because she contridicts herself SO MANY times. She says that she feeds a raw diet because she is appalled by commercial diets that use fillers and by-ptoducts and other "unsuitable" ingredients BUT she is feeding EUKANUBA! Eukanuba is one of those foods that has by-prodcuts and a ton of fillers....contridiction? I think so! You can't say you're against those foods and then promote it. Plus BadGirl says you shouldn't exercise these dogs too much and then states her dog was overweight! I think there is a little too much uncertainty in this answer.

If you are actually SERIOUS about feeding your dog a good quality diet, you have to get away from mass market products like Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree, and vet diets like Science Diet, Royal Canin and Walthams. These foods are ALL low quality.

You need to look for a food that is not from a major company and has whole fresh ingredients. Innova/Karma/California Natural (Natura Pet Foods) are the healthiest pet foods in the world. There is currently no food or company that has surpassed their quality. The ingredients in Innova include: Chicken, turkey, rice, barley, potatoes, carrots, apples, eggs, herring, flaxseed, alfalfa and sunflower oil.

Your Saint Bernard would thrive a well rounded healthy diet. You need to stay away from any food that has "by-product" in the ingredient list or fillers which include corn, beet pulp, wheat, sorghum, generic"meat" or "animal", etc.

Just use common sense. If it sounds good enough for you to eat, chances are it's healthier for your dog.

Good luck and chose wisely!

Initially she should be on the food she's been eating with her breeder - and her breeder should have told you that already so you can go buy a bag of that food ahead of her coming to you. If you switch food without doing it gradually, you will have a Saint with an upset tummy - and I'd not want to think about that!! I'd not touch Royal Canin, especially for a big breed animal. This food is far too high in most things, especially protein and first hand, I've had experienced with a dog, not a Saint, but a heavy boned breed, raised on this. Over hyped, and over priced. There is better. Once she's been with you, on the same food she's having now, and you feel she needs to be switched, then again, do it gradually and research for a food that lists the ingredients with meat first.

Definitely a "large-breed" formula, and I think you've posted before that your dog's 5 months old, so it may still need a puppy formula (I think puppy formulas have information on ages it's appropriate for on the packaging). Science Diet has always been good to our dogs, until our Golden developed an allergy. If in doubt, get a recommendation from your vet.

Large breed puppy food is a marketing ploy. If you compare the labels, it is the same as adult dog food. This was told to me by a vet with special training in nutrition.
Get a good quality adult dog food with meat as the first ingredient on the label.

I would use Eukanuba, Iams, or Science Diet but whatever you use make sure that it is a large breed formula.
