Someone once demonstrated that God exists by postulating the opposite, ie that He does not, and then 'proved' that this is untrue. Does anyone out there have any knowledge of the argument used?

Just because you can't prove that God exists doesn't mean the he doesn't.

But just because you can't prove that he doesn't exist doesn't mean that he does.

You have to look at the reasons for God to need to exist by humans. We (humans) have become self aware beings and developed enough intelligence to be able to ask questions about our origins. However, there are so many questions we just can't answer that the easiest way to get our heads round it is to invent a "creator" a supreme, magical being. That also means we don't have to have these questions answered.

If I was to go back in time an show an MP3 player to someone who lived 2000 years ago, they would not be able to understand it, it would be magic to them, pure and simple wizardry. We of course know that it is far from magic.

There are indeed many great and rational arguments for the existence of God, but one thing is for sure; if he does exist he/ she/ it, is NOT the God portrayed in Christianity, Islam, Judaism or any other Earthly religions.

Yes, God may exist but religion is 100% a figment of human imagination.

Well, you got at least one answer (Proof by Contradiction) although I am not familiar with the argument.

The argument I find most convincing is the Prime Mover argument in combination with the "Big Bang". The prime mover argument states "For there to be a creation there must be a creator and no creation can be greater than its creator."

Although I do not understand the math, I have been told the "Big Bang" theory of universal origin is a mathematical certainty and a one time event. If that is true, then the Big Bang is an act of creation and therefore there must be the Creator "God".

If you find the direct answer to your question, I would love to hear it.

Not sure if this was what you were after but there was a discussion between an Archbishop and a scientist on BBC2 in the late 70s..... The discussion was on the big-bang theory and how it impacted modern religion. The Archbishop turned the scientists argument around and "proved" that it couldn't happen (how I can't remember, sorry but I remember thinking that there was some very stretched logic used by both sides)..... Since this was nearly 30 years ago my memory of it is very patchy but I do remember watching it.....

The argument uses a method of proof called "Proof by Contradiction". It's a common way to prove the existence of God in this manner. For a quick test, Stand in front of a mirror, look at your reflection, and ask yourself: Could a complex being such as myself exist without the possibility of a creator who thought of, and designed every aspect of my being? Or to make it like the above question, Could I exist if God didn't exist? Answer shouldn't be hard to figure out.

I find it funny that some of the answers you received have been just a yes or no. People dont actually bother reading your question further about the fact whether it has been proven. I also have heard that athiests asked this question and that in trying to prove He did not exist they in fact couldnt and were converted. Here are some websites that may be of interest and help answer your question.

Incidentally I believe that He does exist.

I'm not sure about this.
Voltaire said that if god did not exist it would be necessary to invent him.
And I think it was Pascal(maybe Descartes) who said it was best to put your money on god, as that way you might get eternal life, whereas if you bet the other way you got nothing even if you won.
The proof you are referring to would probably be by showing absurdity, but it is quite a difficult form of proof. It's not really possible to prove things in the mathematical sense except in the realm of mathematics.
Generally, god takes the place of an axiom, that is why religious people emphasise faith.

Do you think that the entire universe, with all its amazing order, variety and complexity, could just exist fully formed with no origin or precursor whatsoever? I think it would be ridiculous to believe that. By the same token it's even more ridiculous to suppose that something infinitely *more* amazing - an intelligent entity capable of designing and creating an entire universe - could just exist fully formed with no origin or precursor whatsoever.

Science shows that order and variety and complexity arise spontaneously from disorder and chaos by the action of unthinking natural processes - e.g. cosmology and evolution. Intelligence is a product of that process. It's clearly absurd to suggest that intelligence could exist before there was a universe for it to arise in.

Hence a god cannot possibly exist.

Sorry no, but God does exist, I can only say this because I know Him! would be an interesting argument though.
