What you will find with cigarettes is that they are made differently depending on where they are being sent.
They have a tendency of perfuming them more for countries with a colder climate and they are more natural for countries with a higher climate.

Try taking one of your brands with you next time you go on holiday and you will notice a difference.

So i presume the fact you think they are more addictive is just because they have different ingredients in them.

Definitely agree.

This is caused by differing health restrictions, different customer tastes, and different economic conditions, among others...

Different countries are likely to have different health restrictions so the manufacturers have to take that into account. They also find it uneconomical to create seperate brands for these slight deviations; because they would lose the 'goodwill' associated with their worldwide names 'marlboro lights' as you said.

Also it does make sense to cater to slightly different customer tastes. For example if your main selling point is strong cigarettes, then if you are planning to sell cigarettes where people prefer lighter ones, you could still sell your 'strong' brand, but make it lighter than usual but still strong by the standards of the new market. Your new customers will still be smoking 'strong cigarettes' as far as their market is concerned and your $ spent on advertising worldwide can be spread over an extra economy, and your international brand command a premium.

However, this need not be due only to consumer tastes. For example even batteries are built differently. The same brand made for one market lasts longer than one made for a different market (prices are different) on the same equipment. Here, rather by consumer tastes, this is driven by profits; to keep similar margins, make a lousier product for a market where prices are lower. But again if you are known say for long lasting batteries, in the market your batteries should last a bit longer than average.

The US Marlboro's seem dry to me. British ones are nice and moist.

BUT it is probably best not to bother.

Lets all QUIT en masse and put Philip Morris out of business

You could well be right. I have definitely noticed that the strength of same brand cigarettes varies hugely country to country.

Best not to bother ;-)
