What do you mean by the traditional roots of 'oral reading'? Oral reading is reading out loud. That's what happens when a group of people
a) only have one copy of a book, or
b) only have one literate person, or
c) someone wants to read something for a particular reason, or
c) someone wants to share something with a group of people, such as a school teacher reading to the class, someone reading poetry, reading speeches, etc.etc.
d) someone is reading aloud while someone else listens, to ensure that they are reading correctly.
Other than these usages, there aren't really any other instances of oral reading.
