By the same logic, if people say Thor doesn't exist, that must mean he exists, right? If people say fairies don't exist then they must exist, right?
Why do people say such breath-takingly stupid things?

adyghe1985: It's something that religious folks sometimes say when atheists say they don't believe in gods or demons or any supernatural characters at all. Supposedly, the fact that we don't believe Satan exists means that he exists, because he says he doesn't exist. It's just more twisted illogic from theists.

FlGirl518: Satan, Thor, Loki and all other supernatural characters are just figments of people's imaginations, so yes they are all exactly the same in that respect.

Jezza_Austra...: We need to make the world a better place by eradicating religion, and helping people to see how ridiculous it is, is part of that process.

tuflady: No, they're all just stories, like Santa Claus and fairies and gnomes and goblins and elves and witches and wizards and demons and ghosts and spirits and souls and water sprites and so on and so forth, ad nauseum. They're fine as children's stories but they're all things you should have grown out of when you became an adult.

Johnny W: Religion is all in the human imagination, with no basis in reality. Think about it.

unterduh2000iq: The point is, gods and demons are *all* imaginary characters. Rejecting one does not mean accepting another. People need to think about things in an adult way, not keep believing in fairy tales.

Stansky: The point is that grown adults believing in the existence of demons is just as ridiculous as grown adults believing in the existence of gods. They're the stuff of children's fairy tales, nothing more.

ed: From the point of view of someone cynically trying to manipulate people for political ends, you're right, - It makes sense to instill ridiculous ideas in them as if they were true. It just defeats me that people still take such stuff seriously in this day and age.

Actually, I would say that if Satan exists, then it is he, not God, who has inspired the Bible. By distancing man from God through the creation of a holy book that is so hopelessly convoluted that it is absolutely impossible to be sure of what path to salvation is correct would be a far better trick than just convincing people that he (Satan) does not exist.

Satan is the father of lies. One night while I was asleep....I had a dream...except it didn't seem like a dream.. Something was laying on top of me, choking me . I was laying on my stomach so I could not reach around and get him off. But I said "Oh God" because I knew who he was (satan). He disappeared..It seem so real.... Again about a week later the same thing happened...this time he was about 1/2 the size and I did'nt get scared at all. He disappeared...... I came down with cancer a while later...but God delivered me out of that too..and gave me joy in spite of everything.

That's NOT by the same logic. When people say Thor doesn't exist it has nothing to do with thunder. The world's greatest liar, however, WOULD have a reason to propagate the lie.
Try to think before you bash people.

Think about it. Think about what a powerful tool it is. There's nothing stupid about it; it's an amazing tool for manipulation of the human mind. It allows Christians to blame the Devil for their bad actions, and it even allows them to carry on in the face of rejection:
"I'm sorry I stabbed your mother to death. The Devil made me do it."
"No he didn't. I don't believe that."
"Of course he did! Of course he exists! See? The fact that you don't believe in Satan is proof that he exists! He's made you believe that! You're possessed by the devil too! Everybody, let's lynch this guy; not me!"
In my opinion, every time we thank God for a human's actions, we insult that person. But every time we blame the Devil for a human's actions, we insult the whole human race.

where do you get satan saying he doesn't exist? he started a rebellion and took a third of the sky - he radically changed our planet and our relationship to YHVH - his job as accuser is spelled out precisely in the beginning of the Book of Job -- he is trying so hard to get everyone to notice he does exist. it's not that hard.
he's the father of all lies for a reason - but your core question is intriguing because one wonders sometimes if he is playing a character for God for our benefit -- or is it really about him himself?
