I drink a protein shake with milk and a banana every morning to stimulate my metabolism. The best time to drink a protein shake is within 30 minutes after your workout since your muscles need protein to repair the muscle fibers (microtears) that were damaged (the essence of body building). But, remember this, protein shakes are supplements therefore I assume you have a rich diet containing vitamins, minerals and healthy carbs. Casein protein is better for long-term delivery of protein and whey is absorbed within 20-40 minutes in your intestine and used almost instantaneously by your muscles. Soy protein is more like casein but has more phytonutrients and minerals.

I would take mine about and hour after the workout. That way the body can digest it afterwards and it can help repair the tissue you just broke down. At night an hour before you sleep is also good, the body repairs itself while you sleep and will utilize that shake you drank. I usually just ate fruit like an apple or banana and drank a carb drink before the workout, drank a little water during.

you definitely need a shake right after workout...within an hour. you can also take one about 30 mins before workout but the most important one is the one right after workout.
