What does it mean when in a religous painting someone has a yelllow circle around their head?

The yellow circle usually depicts holiness. You will see that circle in some paintings with angels also.

the circle represents the energy field above the crown chakra--to have such a powerfull field as represented indicates a very enlightened/holy being.

It means that they are a saint, archangel or a member of the holy family.
