The best-selling new cars in the UK in the first six months of 2006 were:

1 Ford Focus
2 Vauxhall Astra
3 Ford Fiesta
4 Vauxhall Corsa
5 Volkswagen Golf
6 Renault Clio
7 Ford Mondeo
8 Vauxhall Zafira
9 BMW 3-Series
10 Vauxhall Vectra

Ford used to build a lot of cars in the UK (from about 1910 to 2001 - the first Ford factory outside the USA was in England), so established a large share of the market, and have more dealers. They don't build any Ford-badged cars in the UK now, but many people still consider them to be a British brand (even though they've always been American owned).

Fuel efficiency is a priority, but there are always many other things considered when buying a car - interior space, styling, performance, reliability, dealer location/reputation, other running costs, ride, handling, comfort, equipment, price, special offers, previous experience of the brand or the dealer, etc.

Hatchbacks outsell saloons (sedans) except for the premium brands/segments - saloons are a bit old-hat, 1960s or 1970s, something your dad drove, to a lot of people.

smart autos were very time-honored, then smart constrained their sort selection, yet now contained in the united kingdom a clean smart fortwo is out they're quite time-honored, call for is now more desirable than availability. very lower priced to run exceedingly contained in the London section as they have congestion costs, and smart are quickly to be exempt, and construct high quality now is extra positive, i'd propose you bounce on the smart band wagon
