Yes, it is. People should do it because of good morals if they are not of an religion and not just to their families and friends. I give to a volunteer shelter almost every month as much as possible. How about you?

It is Christlike to give to the poor. But you have to remember that its not so much how much you give but what the condition of your heart is while giving. It says in 1Cor.13:3 "If I give all I possess to the poor...but have not love, I gain nothing" If we give to the poor with a loveing heart, God will reward us in heaven, its not so much about recieving a tap on the back but knowing that you helped someone out. Without love there is nothing Christlike about it. He always gave with love, and in my opinion the best thing you can give is the love of God and the gift of salvation.

If you want to know what is Christlike, study the New Testament. If you want to learn to be a pseudo-Christian, study the Old Testament to find reasons not to be Christlike and at the same time feeling superior and righteous.

we should all do are part i don't mean give them u whole paycheck. but u can do community service if u don't have the $ to dish out. sure we will never be able to do and give all that we have, but then again we are not Christ r we? time can be weighted just as easily as gold. i do some community work when habitat for humanity was building houses i got people to donate food 4 the workers since the are all in it 4 on money.i donated water 4 Katrina and a friend got her old church(built a new one) to donate their old building 4 them to live. the collection plate 4 the next week payed 4 their bus fare, and we also got stores to donate food. my place of business had recently closed down i worked in a group home 4 mentally challenged people
and instead of trying to move all their clothes with them they gave almost all their clothes to be given to them. i try to remember if i was so poor?......................i hope i gave u what u wanted to hear

it is not only christ like to give out alms but is also a bounden duty.
amongst muslims its made compulsory to give out a portion of your wealth (as zakaat) if u can make the both ends meet comfortably. its ordained upon us that if we know that a neighbor (of whichever religion, caste and creed) is hungry and doesn't have food and we are aquainted with the fact and still eat our own food ( whatever little) without sharin' it , it will be haram (somethin' that is forbidden) on us to do that.
as a human also just think that what must god feel when he looks from the heaven and sees 2 neighbors- one starving and the other owning a posh bunglaw and holidayin' somewhere.
the aim of charity is 2 minimize the great economic divide sweepin' the world.

It is Christ like and shows humanity and care.
I gave five dollars to a man a few days ago how was homeless- he didn't ask anyone for money but he obviously was homeless and in the hot LA weather I gave him five dollars.
At this moment in my life I can;t just buy myself anything anytime I want to but, giving was very important to me then and still is. He has less than I. I can spare 5$ for a homeless man... He was pleased and the next time I saw him he had a huge bottle of water... and smiled at me.
5$ was all I had in my wallet expect 1 dollar in quarters I always keep in purse in case of parking meters or phone booth usage...

You are only obligated to give if it is within your means. As well, what you give is between you and God, which is why a plate being passed around (as done in some churches), is actually unscriptural. A donation is a confidential matter, and giving should always be under the conditions of happiness.
