It could be a variation of trichotillomania, where you pull out your hair. There's also one where you pick at your skin, like scabs or whatever. I have both and pull out my eyebrows and eyelashes. It's some form of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) I believe. If you try searching for trichotillomania, you might be able to find some information about other similar disorders, such as yours.
Of course it could also just be a nervous habit, like biting your nails. Depends on how severe it is.

I'm sure others probably do it, so I wouldn't worry about whether or not it's normal. To stop, you just have to stop. If you're worried about people seeing the flakes, use a good dandruff shampoo at least 3 times a week, and get some seabreeze (astringent) or a similar product and rub it into your scalp generously once a week for the first month, and then cut down slowly to just once a month. It helps to exfoliate the scalp and really reduce flaking.
My dad and I both have bad dandruff and this has worked for me for years....my dad just decided to get rid of his hair apparently (male pattern baldness...lol).
Good luck.

you may have scalp psoriasis and which case washing more often like mentioned will make it worse. if its thick and scaly like its not dandruff. and picking at it is a normal habit most people do plus you have to pick that out its not just snow type dandruf. Go see a dermatologist about it cause it will get worse if not treated. treating it will at least keep it at bay more when you have out breaks. natural sunlight is really good for your scalp. use gentle shampoos and try not to scratch it too much.
If its psoriasis then dandruf shampoos are too harsh. its not like dandruff which is just dried skin flakes or product build up. psoriasis is a primarily a disorder of excessive growth and reproduction of skin cells. see link for more info

First of all change more often your hair shampoo. This will help not to have dandruff on the future. For now, it would help to get rid of it, if you would use Head and Shoulders, but not more than 4-5 months. If it will not help you, you could use Nizoral shampoo: it is used especially for dandruff problems.
