In this day of dried dog food, bloat is quite common. this is where a dog is given a full dish of dry or poorly hydrated food and bolts it down. As this food absorbs the stomach acids, it begins to swell in size, overloading the stomach.
The dog then vomits a good part of it up to relieve the pressure. Since it is good food the dog will then usually after a couple of minutes, start to eat it again, albeit a bit more carefully.
If the dog has been sick because of bad food or illness, then it will not eat its vomit.

When my dog is sick she also eats it.
Although if no-one is around she will not eat it.
When I once came home after being out for a short time my pooch had been sick and had left it but as soon as she saw that i had seen it, she immediately went over and started eating it.
I know this sounds odd but i don't know whether she was embarrassed about it being there and wanted to get rid of it so that she didn't get told off (which she wouldn't have been anyway) or whether she had forgotten that it was there and then saw it when i saw it.
Strange huh?

If a dog just eats too quickly and throws up it will just eat it again because the food has simply been swallowed once before so why waste it.
Dogs that are ill are less likely to eat their own vomit as they seem to be aware that their bodies are trying to get rid of whatever is making them ill.
If a female is allowed to wean her puppies - most of them don't because we provide puppy food - she will regurgitate her meal and feed the puppies with the part digested food.
Puppies almost always lick around their mother's face if she has been away from them. This is because the face-licking will stimulate the mother to regurgitate for them.
If you have ever been licked around the face by a particularly friendly and submissive puppy it is doing this to get you to regurgitate for it!
Before you get too appalled by this you might be interested to know that in the Western world in years gone by but not that long ago, and in other countries up to the present, human mothers wean their babies on to solid food by chewing their own food then feeding it to the baby. Less fuss than opening a can of baby food!

dogs eat by sense of smell, the smell according to us might be good or bad but at the end of the day its all smell for them!!! they dont differentiate between fresh food and available food, anything edible seen is food for them as long as their sensory perception permits them to eat 'em... if we are around, its better to stop them from doing so, cos dogs, any breed tend to loose on their immune system, related directly to their length of being with humans, this is why the mentality of pedigree pups are more-"human-like"!!! hope we get successful in helping mongrels as well in getting a better life!!!! all the best to us all !!!!!!!! And hey!!! dogs which have just littered, eat the descreta of their pups, this is not wrong, cos it provides certain nutrients to the adult at the same time keeps the premise clean!!! ;)

They do not know any better. Dogs will eat their vomit if it has food in it because they just smell the food. They do not know it is bad, just like anything else. Some dogs eat their feces. My dog used to do that when she was younger, quite a nasty surprise when I found her eating something, I said "Hey, what do you have there..." and reached my fingers into her mouth, only to pull out... thankfully, she grew out of it.

We once had a cat that ate human sick - a friend used to regularly get chicken and sweetcorn chinese meals when she was drunk then vomit it all back when it had been down for maybe two minutes. And the cat used to come and pick the chicken out.

Dogs eat by raw instinct: they don't really know when to quit. And sometimes, it's theorized, taste doesn't become an issue, either.

When the pups are still with their mother they learn to eat the mess they make to keep the bed area clean.

I guess in their wild life as scavengers they have to consider the value of pretty much any food source including sick and poo
