I'm learning Chinese. I've tried quite a few different books and programs, but I feel that Rosetta Stone is the best investment.

It is kind of frustrating in that it doesn't give explanation of the grammar - it is supposed to be an 'immersive approach' (though, maybe this is not such a big deal with German because you can guess so much more based on similarity to English).

Also, it can be tough to keep motivated: I find the social aspect of face-to-face lessons more motivating. But, I think Rosetta Stone is a helpful study tool -- I have a few tapes and books as well, so that when I find one medium tedious, I can switch to another. But, Rosetta Stone and the other mediums are always in addition to face-to-face practice or lessons.

I find learning languages very rewarding, so I don't have a problem paying that money. USD300 is a lot (especially when you're paying with Australian dollars, like me), but I think it is worth it. I got mine a fair bit cheaper than the listed price on the website -- they had some special promotion when I bought it at Rosetta stone dealer at the airport in Washington DC.

Why not try the Online Subscription? You can do a free trial, then you could use the online subscription to trial it for a month (for USD50) to see if you really do find it useful and motivating before buying longer-term subscriptions or a CD.

Hello,

That is great, that you want to learn German. It will benefit you in the long run.

i am aware of the price, very shocking, i will be honest with you, when i was learning German, i checked with my librray to see if they have any copies and they did..pheew... what a money saver....

i wasn't ready to pay that much because they is so much a software can teach you but not total immersion or total everything.

I also used Pimsleur recorded program, whihc is like recorded conversations, which proved to be very helpful, i still have it. It is like recorded conversations which can assit you because you can play it on your mp3 player or your cd player very impressive, but not the price as well, that is why i borrowed it from the library.

If you want some valuable books try

Colloquial German and also Teach yourself German

Overall it is Alot, but you aren't going to learn everything by the Rosetta stone. Please, please check with your or a librray first, that way you can try it out to see if it is for you before investing in it....

I saw a commercial on that today! I don't know if it works. Maybe you should go to some bookstores/videos and ask some of the people there. You might find something cheaper and you could see if you are really interested enough to keep it up and then delve into spending the money.

It's free for the Army and I learned German while serving in Germany for 9 years...what a paid vacation that was.

Yes, I tried the trial version, and they have a very good, effective teaching method. You need self-discipline to clear their program though. I didn't buy the course because I felt it was too expensive even though it was fast-track learning, for basic stuff.

If you're a very analytical person, it may be difficult for you to trust that the process works, but I think it would certainly help most people who use it.

i checked them out from the library. they're very good because they try and get you to associate german (or whatever language) with pictures instead of engish words, so it's sort of like learning a first langauage.

It is just that you have to apply yourself. It gives you the basics. If you are really serious, it is a good investment.
