There are mortal sins and venial sins. An example of a mortal sin would be murdering someone while knowing that is was against God's will to do so. A venial sin would be saying, "Oh my God" in excitement. Am I mistaken on this or do all Protestants think all sin is the same?

all sins offend god the same but not all sins are them same. it is clearly worse to murder than to curse in excitement.

J Stew....you are what I call a fool. I truly did want to know why, and I have realized that it is because of their lack of knowledge. Propaganda refers to political issues. A question seeking answers is not a form of propaganda and never will be. I suggest that YOU come back when you truly care because you obviously do not, because you never answered the question. So i suggest that YOU go away.

the previous answerer is wrong... again.
Holy Scripture does show that there are 2 types of sin.
Jesus said that the one who knows his master's will and does not do it will be beaten with many blows, while the one who does not know his master's will and does not do it will be beaten with few blows (Luke 12:47-48).
Jesus tells us that there is punishment for both cases, but that one "sinner" is punished more severely.
The Holy Spirit (writing through the hands of the apostle John) tells us, "If anyone sees his brother commit sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death" (1 John 5:16-17)?
The Holy Spirit tells us that there are 2 types of sin.
Sin that does NOT lead to death (venial sin) and sin that leads to death (mortal sin). The "death" reffered to is eternal death, i.e. hell.
So venial sin does not go without punishment but does not receive eternal punishment.
Mortal sin is punished with eternal punishment, i.e. hell.

All sin IS the same in that it causes a disconnect with God. Sin leads to death, for sin separates us from the divine. It doesn't matter whether the sin is mortal or venial; all sin serves to sever our relationship with God. We are all sinners and we are all in need of God's forgiveness and that forgiveness comes in the person of Christ, who died on the cross to pay the penalty for sin - even the big ones, even the little ones.

Most think sin is the same. It's like having a white shirt on an spilling coffee on it. Yeah, a big spot looks worse, but even a little spot makes the shirt look like crap. That's how it is with God...he's perfect so even the smallest sin makes us look like crap in comparision, and since Protestants don't do penances for sins, just pray for forgiveness, there's really no need to make a distinction between different sins.

This is what we call a "loaded question."
It's a form of persuasive speaking, moreover a propaganda tool.
It also shows that the person asking th question has no interest in the answers, and merely wants to sublty plant a suggestion.
Come back when you really care =)

I used to be a RC so know where you are coming from. However the BIBLE clearly tells us in Exodus 20:7 THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD THY GOD IN VAIN; FOR THE LORD WILL NOT HOLD HIM GUILTLESS THAT TAKES HIS NAME IN VAIN.
When God said he will not hold him guiltless he meant what He said and I don't believe anyone can be a true child of God who takes the name of God in vain.
NOWHERE in the Holy Scriptures are we told that there are two types of sins, that is something totally made up by RC teaching and has no place in Scripture.
If you start to read the Bible you will find lots of things that you have been taught my man is not the same as God teaches us.
Cursing God is every bit as serious as murder make no mistake, and Christ died for ALL of our sins. As sinners we all put Christ on the cross. Sin is what puts a barrier between us and God.
However I would watch your tongue young man as you are under a curse as long as you blaspheme Gods most Holy name.

Protestants don't have Indulgence, the practice of paying something under the table to the priest to whitewash infraction. Ask your priest about Indulgence. The price was $20,000 to change a "divorce" to an "annulment" I noticed about 5 years ago.

I don't think the premise of this question really deserves much response--first of all it ASSUMES that ALL protestants believe this and sets up that base to found the question on---and that is clearly wrong.....all protestants DO NOT believe this...and to promote that AS a fact is to be promoting a false view

I was a pentecostal for a number of years and am now spiritual to avoid dividing myself from other people through the use of religion but one of the first things I learned was that the Catholic Church was in constant violation of the 1st and 2nd Commandments;
1. "I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me... .."
This commandment is to believe in the existence of God and His influence on events in the world. It prohibits belief in or worship of any additional deities.
2. "Do not make a sculpted image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."
This prohibits the construction or fashioning of "idols" in the likeness of created things (beasts, fish, birds, people) and worshipping them.

there are passages in the bible that say all sins are the same in gods eyes. catholics are just odd. (im not bashing catholics, its my fav. christian religion)
//edit// in your additional w/e you say that all sins offend god the same but are not the same to humans. that is true, but we cannot look upon sins from a divine sinless perspective and thus should not be able to say one sin is worse than another

the concept that all sins are equal is logical.
the reason I say that is because the bible prescribed punishments for different sins
Murder- death
eating pork- lashes
negligent homicide- exile
if G-d gave different punishments for different sins then they cannot possibly be equal!
