I myself am an 18 year old teenager and I hate it. Seeing my peers use it makes me think that everyone is just lazy or something.

They do not realize that it is teh dumbing down of America by doing it in the normal everyday life. I see people doing it on resumes now. People don't know how to spell anymore as a result.

I can understand it on a cell phone, otherwise it would take me all day to text someone. But all the other stuff is annoying, and I don't know what half the little acronyms mean...for a long time I though brb meant bath room break...

In online conversations over AIM, etc., people type quickly (especially in chatrooms, etc.). That is why people will type "omg lol" instead of "Oh, my goodness! That was so hilarious, I am laughing out loud as I type this!" It makes the conversation run more smoothly this way.

Outside of instant messaging and texting, most of these Internet abbreviations should probably be avoided.

To be trendy I guess and to look like you know how to do it. Personally I don't like to do it b/c it takes too much time and I could easily write out the word with little effort since I know the keyboard and I don't have to just finger waltz.:) But I do it sometimes to just be different and not look so old or boring.

Yes it does not. However, this could be the new literacy :-)
Lets face it. We were forced to learn this language in order to type less on keyboards and more importantly on SMS windows. So this is in itself a new language. But people should not use it everywhere. Atleast, not yet!

It's a fad. Not fabulous. Not new.

But every generation thinks they have come up with some fabulous new thing. And it's probably relatively harmless--as long as they can spell if they need to.

Anyone who speaks in other than his mother tongue tends to speak grammatically. Too much use of abbreviations only make everyone mad.

Yes, it is annoying, but language changes all the time. Soon the proper form of you will be "u". We must get used to it.
