Of course! Not too many dog's will refuse to go after something that's wiggling on the ground.
Jack Russells are experts at hunting, finding and killing small vermin of any type. It's a game to them!

Terriers like jack russels can kill snakes. However It is a good idea to train them to stay away from snakes because they can get hurt or killed. A professional handler can use a shock collar to condition the dog to avoid snakes. while some people do not like the idea of using a shock collar, I would rather do this a couple of times than watch the dog suffer and die from a snake bite. Cats also kill snakes.

I've seen this question before...is this a myth or something? a jack russell "tall tale".
the thing is that a jack russell is a terrier! and terriers are known for their tenacious ways.
many terriers were breed to chase and kill vermin, such as opossums, moles, rats, mice, etc. so its not surprising that a jack russell would go after a snake. but as a general rule...i would keep my dog away from ANY snake!

they are very smart dogs and very protective. they will go up against anything if they thing their master is in danger or threatened. the russel usually would bark alot at a snake more than atack it. the snake will try to get away and the dog jumps around barking as its in its territory. a few snake strikes and the dog gets mad enough to attack. if poisonous, odds are it will get hit. but the dog will still even dying kill the snake to protect.

My jack russell definitely kills snakes....and ground hogs and possums and mice and and whatever he can catch. Good luck training a jack to not kill vermin, its their nature. Just make sure they are always up to date on their shots and be prepared to make trips to the vet more often than most breeds. Jacks are not the easiest breed to deal with, they take alot of patience and attention. They are very smart and make great companions.

Oh, terriers can be downright ferocious with anything creepy-crawly! It's what they were created for. My dogs have displaced that instinct a bit... They actively hunt bugs. June bugs are their favorites, probably because of how loud they are when they fly.

In cases like these, it is not generally advisable to allow them to develop the habit. He won't know the difference between a garden snake and a poisonous one, for instance. (Just like my terrier not knowing the difference between a June bug and a bumblebee. Almost lost her to an allergic reaction that time.)

But, yes, terriers will often go after snakes with great fervor.

almost any dog can and will kill snakes. jackies were actually bred to catch and kill small game and rats, so this might be a natural insinct. best advice is to keep the snakes alive so they can do their job and give your jackie some toys to keep him occupied.

Can they ? Of course. *Should* they? Well...there's always a chance they'll find a poisonous type. If there are aLOT of dangerous types, you'd be smart breaking them off em.(YES,you CAN) Other wise, leave em ALONE!
BTW, RATS? They were bred for FOX!!

JR's will have a go at most things, they're best suited for rats but they will have a go at anything they feel is a threat.
