Hello,
I self-taught German my self, for numerous reasons, in the saved me an abundance of money.
There are lots of places and adverts that claim to give you total immersion but, do not.
I have found Pimsleur very useful and excellent. http://www.cheappimsleur.com/
try the above website very great for Cheap pimsleurs, if you do not use the librray or the library dosen't have any Pimsleur programs.
Rosetta stone is also good as well, but dosen't teach you everything, i got it from the library was 70% pleased, but i also used it together with other books and also resources which included recorded cd like Pimsleurs, Ultimate series etc

Have your friend teach you common everyday phrases, the sounds of the letters, make a vocabulary list and memorize it, adding to it when you learn a new word, and finally, have your friend only speak to you in German.
YOU'LL BE SPEAKING BASIC GERMAN IN NO TIME!!
